Tibetan Singing Bowls: Sound, Vibration and Relaxation

3 min readTatsiana Harelava

A session with Tibetan singing bowls is an hour of stillness in which the sound and vibration of the bowls, placed on the body, guide you towards deep relaxation. It is not a medical treatment and it promises no results: it is a space for listening, chosen mostly by people who are tired, under pressure or find it hard to switch off.

What Tibetan singing bowls are

They are metal bowls that, when the rim is stroked or the bowl is made to ring, produce a long sound rich in overtones together with a vibration you can feel. Each bowl has its own range of frequencies, which is why bowls of different sizes are used.

“Just as a piano cannot play in harmony if one key is out of tune, the body cannot be in balance if it does not vibrate at its natural frequency.” — Tatsiana Harelava

This is an image, not a scientific explanation: it describes how Tatsiana Harelava sees this work — as a chance for the body to “retune” itself through listening.

How a session works

  • Duration: about one hour.
  • Position: lying down, fully clothed, in comfortable clothes.
  • Atmosphere: complete silence, because we listen to the bowls.
  • Technique: the bowls are placed on the body and made to vibrate with a continuous movement along the rim — they are not struck. The same bowl sounds different on every person, and the session follows what is heard in that moment.
  • At the end: a few minutes to come back calmly and, if you wish, to share what you noticed.

What people notice

During the session most people relax deeply without falling asleep. Afterwards many describe calm, a feeling of lightness and more energy. Everyone experiences the sound and vibrations differently.

When people choose it

  • in periods of physical or emotional tiredness;
  • when it is hard to relax or slow down;
  • at times of heavy pressure at work;
  • out of curiosity for a different kind of listening experience;
  • as a gentle complement to other bodywork practices.

What it is not

A session with Tibetan singing bowls is not a therapy and does not replace medical diagnosis, care or treatment. The work is not aimed at symptoms or conditions: it offers the body a time of stillness. If you are under medical care, the session can go alongside it, not instead of it.

Where and how to book

Sessions take place in Bolzano, Piazza delle Erbe 37. All the details are on the page Tibetan singing bowls in Bolzano; to book, write on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a session with Tibetan singing bowls last?

About one hour, including time to settle at the beginning and to come back calmly at the end.

Do I need to prepare or bring anything?

No. Comfortable clothes are enough: you stay dressed and lying down for the whole session. It is better not to arrive straight after a heavy meal.

Is it suitable for everyone?

If you are pregnant, have an implanted medical device, epilepsy or another medical condition, please discuss with your doctor whether a session is suitable before booking, and let Tatsiana know. Whether a session is possible for a child needs to be checked in advance.

Will I fall asleep?

Usually not: people relax deeply while staying present. If you do doze off, that is not a problem.

How is it different from a group sound bath?

In a sound bath you listen to sound in the room, together with other people. Here the session is individual and the bowls rest on the body: besides the sound you feel the vibration, and the work follows you personally.

How many sessions do I need?

There is no set number. Some people come once out of curiosity, others come back during busy or stressful periods. We decide together, with no compulsory packages.
